Automation and Employment: How to Adapt to Labor Market Changes

Introduction

Automation and technological advances are profoundly transforming the labor market, creating new challenges and opportunities for workers. Studies indicate that approximately 63% of total employment in Mexico could be automated in the coming years (Minian & Martinez Monroy, 2018). This reality demands constant adaptation of the skills and abilities of the workforce.

The most significant changes are seen in three main areas:

  1. The replacement of routine tasks by automated systems, especially affecting less qualified workers (Iglesias Quintana et al., 2024)
  2. The emergence of new occupations linked to technology and data management (Fieiras Ceide et al., 2023)
  3. The need to develop digital skills and cross-disciplinary competencies to maintain employability (Pinto Molina, 2023)

In this scenario, continuous training and professional retraining become fundamental. Companies and workers must invest in the development of competencies that allow them to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the digital transformation (Jiménez Martínez et al., 2023).

The labor market increasingly demands professionals with the ability to: – Adapt to changing technological environments – Work collaboratively – Solve complex problems – Manage digital information – Learn continuously

To respond effectively to these changes, it is necessary to establish coordinated strategies between the education system, companies and workers. Collaboration between these actors will allow the development of training programs aligned with the needs of the current labor market (Fernandes, 2024).
